ROCKINGHAM — Unheralded Jay Cox of Smithfield, N.C., silenced the big guns of Pro Nitrous drag racing Saturday and will start from the No. 1 qualifying position Sunday in the second annual “Roar at the Rock” PDRA Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.
Qualifying in a field that included defending event and series champion Jason Harris of Pittsboro, N.C., two-time reigning NHRA Pro Modified Champion and five-time IHRA World Pro Stock Champion Rickie Smith of King, N.C., and point leader Tommy Franklin of Fredericksburg, Va., Cox drove his replica 1969 Chevy Camaro through the eighth-mile course in 3.744 seconds at 200.35 miles per hour to outrun the field.
Jason Scruggs of Saltillo, Miss., drove his replica 1969 Chevy Camaro to the No. 1 qualifying position in the featured Pro Extreme class in advance of Sunday eliminations in the second annual “Roar at the Rock” PDRA Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway. Scruggs covered the eighth-mile course in 3.542 seconds at 217.42 miles per hour.
Harris, the 35-year-old second generation racer who was virtually unbeatable a year ago when he won six of eight PDRA stops, wasn’t even in the starting field before bumping in on the last of his four attempts at the wheel of a hybrid 1968 Pontiac replica he calls “Warbird.”
After a preliminary round of racing Saturday, one in which Franklin became the first upset victim of the weekend, single elimination finals resume at 11 a.m. Sunday with competition in Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Pro Boost, Pro Outlaw, Pro Extreme Motorcycle, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and two Jr. Dragster classes. Sunday admission is $20 with a downloadable coupon or $25 without.
Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult and parking is free in Rockingham’s main lot although a limited number of reserved parking spots are available inside the track at a rate of $40.
In the featured Pro Extreme class, Mississippi teammates Jason Scruggs and Bubba Stanton went 1-2 in qualifying with times of 3.542 and 3.548 seconds, respectively. That relegated point leader Mustafa Buhumaid of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to the No. 3 starting position.
Pinetown’s Tommy Leggett was the highest qualified driver NOT in one of the popular 1969 Camaros. He grabbed the fourth spot at 3.575 seconds in his one-of-a-kind 1971 Ford Mustang.
Anthony DiSomma of South Plainfield, N.J., was the quickest qualifier in Pro Boost with his turbo 1967 Ford Mustang. In fact, just as Camaros claimed the top three starting spots in Pro Extreme, Mustangs did the same in Pro Boost with Kevin Rivenbark of Wallace, N.C., second and point lead Kevin Fiscus of Jacksonville, Fla., third in his twin-turbo 2012 Mustang.
There was a woman at the top as well but it wasn’t Lizzy Musi, the eldest daughter of engine builder Pat Musi of Mooresville, N.C., who last year won one of the two Pro Nitrous races that Harris didn’t. Instead, it was her little sister, Patricia, who drove a 2009 Dodge Stratus to the top of the order in the Top Sportsman category, the same class in which Lizzy got her start.
