March 14 – Ellerbe Marathon 
24th annual Ellerbe Marathon, starting and finishing at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church’s community building in Ellerbe. Registration is $65 until March 9.

March 21 – Hoofing for Haiti 5K 
The First United Methodist Church of Rockingham is coordinating the inaugural running of this event, proceeds from which will help fund the church’s mission to Haiti in July. The course will consist primarily of the Mary Ellen Kindley Fitness Trail at Richmond Community College in Hamlet. The event will be timed by Vac & Dash of Albemarle.

April 18 – Run for the Ribbons 5K and Big Fun Run
Formerly the Discovery Place KIDS 5K, this year’s event has teamed up with Foundation of FirstHealth to increase marketing base. The inaugural Rockingham event was staged in 2014 in March, but rainy, cool weather had event officials reconsider for 2015.

April 25 – Cordova 5K
New race director this year in Alicia Chase, but everything else is expected to remain the same except the date — the event is being staged a month earlier in 2015.

A new event coordinated by the Richmond Senior High School Army JROTC.

May 2 – Run for Technology 5K
This second-year event features a two-loop course on the trails around Hinson Lake. Coordinated by the Rockingham Middle School Running Club, event proceeds are used to purchase new technology for student use. This event is being contested four weeks later than in 2014.

May 23 – May Madness 10 x 5K
How fast can you run 3.1 miles on the sandy trails of the Sandhills Game Lands? How about nine more, on the top of each hour? The fastest cumulative time wins.

June 6 – Bethel Boogie Moonlight 50-miler
The 21st annual event is set to begin at 6 p.m. near Bethel Baptist Church. The course features a six-mile loop and a four-mile out-and-back — times five. The event also has a 30-mile drop option and maintains standings for both 50-milers and 30-milers.

September 26-27 – Hinson Lake 24-Hour Ultra Classic
Registration for the 10th annual event opened Jan. 1 and sold out within only a few days. The event welcomes more than 300 runners from across the United States to run the 1.5032-mile loop around Hinson Lake in Rockingham as many times as possible in 24 hours.

October 10 – GNAT Scat 10K run and 2-mile run/walk
This second-year event features a single loop 6.2-mile paved course on the country roads of Norman in northern Richmond County in conjunction with Norman Fest. Proceeds benefit God’s Garden, a community garden that donates tens of thousands of pounds of produce to area food pantries. Turnout in 2014 was, well, less than stellar but race officials are giving it a second try.

October 31 – Seaboard Festival 5K
Join the Mangum Track Club for the 31st annual Seaboard Festival 5K in Hamlet.

November 14 – Allison Butler Memorial 5K and Doggie Dash
Third third annual event runs for the animals in memory of Allison Butler. Proceeds benefit Richmond County Animal Advocates.

November 28 – Derby 50K
This 13th annual event features three 10.5-mile loops of country road running around the Derby area. Entry is open and only 100 runners are accepted.

Jan. 9, 2016 – Run-Paddle-Run Race and Relay
The debut of this unique running and paddling event takes advantage of the rural country roads around the city of Rockingham and all that nature has to offer along Hitchcock Creek. Individual athletes are encouraged to register, as well as two-person and three-person relay teams. Proceeds will help fund The Pee Dee Post Community Scholarship, awarded each Spring to graduating senior high school students living in Richmond County.
