Rockets upend Dragons, 40-0

ROCKINGHAM — The Rockingham Rockets defeated the Southern Dragons 40-0 on Wednesday at Rockingham Middle School.
ROCKET FOOTBALL COLOR 10-14Jaheim Covington started the scoring immediately for the Rockets by returning the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. Bobby Terry scored on touchdown runs of 35, 5, and 95 yards to close out the first half and quarterback Jahyae Stanback connected with Taveon Ellerbe on passes of 65 and 7 yards two more scores. Terry and Roderick Newton scored on two-point conversions.
Kyjuan Wall and Trevor Whittington led the defense to its second straight shutout, with each posting eight tackles. Bobby Terry also had seven tackles, Jaheim Covington had seven tackles and a sack. Stanback had six tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Jaqua Gladden also had six tackles and contributed on defense and special teams.
“Our kids were focused and excited to play their first home game in front of a large crowd,” said Rockets coach Patrick Hope. “The offense showed a lot of poise executing their assignments. Our defense showed a lot of discipline and courage as they turned away Southern’s scoring threats late in the first half, and late in the second half.”
The Rockets have posted two consecutive shutouts and have outscored their competition by a combined 106-8 en route to a 3-0 record.
They will be on the road next week at Ellerbe, which defeated Anson 20-6 Wednesday afternoon.
