ROCKINGHAM — One of the stars of the Professional Drag Racers Association series raced his way into the Dragstock XI field Saturday on his last qualifying attempt. Another did not.
When eliminations begin at 12 noon Sunday at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway in what arguably is the year’s biggest Pro Modified race, the quickest driver on the planet, Frankie Taylor of Dickinson, Texas, won’t be among those vying for the title in the featured Pro Extreme category.
Taylor, who dropped jaws at The Rock last April when he covered the eighth-mile course in a best-ever 3.485 seconds, could muster nothing better than a 3.753 in two attempts on Saturday.
Meanwhile, point leader Bubba Stanton of Potts Camp, Mississippi, who wasn’t in after the first two sessions, avoided Taylor’s fate with a pressure-packed 3.588 on his final attempt, a time that propelled him all the way to the No. 2 position behind fellow Mississippian Jason Scruggs (3.570).
Other top qualifiers were Tommy Franklin of Fredericksburg, Tennessee, in Pro Nitrous, Steven Whiteley of Grand Junction, Colorado, in Pro Boost, Dean Goforth of Holdenville, Oklahoma in Extreme Pro Stock and Billy Vose of Greensboro, North Carolina in Extreme Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Jason Harris of Pittsboro, who has been to every PDRA final round this year and who has won all but one, will start his “Warbird” Pontiac from the No. 2 starting spot in Pro Nitrous. Mooresville’s Lizzy Musi, the 23-year-old daughter of engine builder Pat Musi and the only driver to have beaten Harris this year, starts fourth.
Champions also will be crowned Sunday in Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and a new Pro 275 class that debuted this weekend.
