CHERAW, S.C. — Mike Reece isn’t much of a golfer.

That self-proclamation, however, didn’t stop the executive director of the Union County (N.C.) Habitat for Humanity from crossing the state line to help one of his own.

Sixteen four-person teams participated in the 5th annual Golf Tournament for Chesterfield County Habitat for Humanity. Along with corporate sponsorship and other donations, Executive Director Chris Carpenter said the event exceeded the goal of raising $8,000.

Reece was joined on the 18-hole course at Cheraw State Park by Troy Pruitt, construction manager with Reece, Terrell Blackmon, executive director of the Matthews chapter, and Larry Rose, of Signs Now in Monroe, N.C.

“I’m happy with the turnout,” said Carpenter, noting it’s about average.

Special incentives were offered along the course, including a new Chevy Cruz for a hole in one on No. 8 and $10,000 for the same rare feat on No. 17.

Play began at noon and while there were performance-based prizes, many golfers were out for the fun of it and to help raise funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity.

Carpenter said the Chesterfield County chapter has built five homes in the county and is working on a sixth in Pageland. In addition, there are two “urgent” repair projects to take place in Cheraw. Carpenter said those two projects are funded by a Wells Fargo grant. The homes for the two projects have already been selected, Carpenter said.

Along the way, many golfers tried their luck at a cash prize for best putt. On a flat, straight green, each of the four members of Team Highway 55 Burgers, Rockingham, N.C., paid $5 for three chances for a great putt. Some did better than others.

The closest to the hole was measured. In the event one or more golfers made the putt, the winner would be declared through a putt-off.

Kevin Mabe, J.R. Cottle, Kevin Adcock and Leighton Bell weren’t the closest to the hole. For a while, bragging rights belonged to Team Woodfirst National Bank and teammate Kenny Collins.
