Pastor Hill: A pricess gift, part 1

Col.1:12-13, “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Paul writes to the Colossian church to combat false doctrines. The Gnostics were mixing error with truth. Paul wrote predominantly about the truth of Christ, truth is always the best method of combating error. Man can better discern error when he is more knowledgeable of truth.

In these verses, Paul tells us what God has delivered us from, so let us consider why we should give thanks unto our Father.

We thank Him for delivering us from the power of darkness. Everyone understands, and has experienced the overwhelming burden that darkness brings. No one is exempt and no one gets a free pass.

DELIVERED FROM THE DARKNESS OF SORROW: This darkness descends as a heavy weight upon the heart and is no respecter of persons. In Gen. 37:33-35, Jacob learned of the loss of his son and he refused to be comforted. The darkness of sorrow causes us to forget the blessings we have received from God and we forget those times that God has previously turned our sorrows into joy.

Ps 30:5, “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

It is hard to trust our future, at times, to God but God is the only One who knows what our future holds. In His wisdom and love, God either allows or uses the circumstances of our life to bring us to the realization of His care. For Jacob, the story did not end in Gen. 37. We discover more about Jacob and Joseph in Gen. 45 when Joseph reveals himself and sends his brothers back to Canaan to get his father. Jacob is no longer in the dark. Joseph tells them;

Gen. 45:13, “And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen;”

DELIVERED FROM THE DARKNESS OF IGNORANCE: Satan attempts to blind us to the knowledge of truth. Much of his efforts are in keeping the world in darkness as to God’s Word, the biblical truths that bring us into the light.

2Co 4:4, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

But Christ has delivered us from darkness and brought us into the light. Even if we only know a little, that little portion is valuable for we grow more truth from the initial foundation of truth that we have believed.

Eph 5:8, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:”

When we find ourselves under the burden of darkness, remember that light is the greatest dispeller of darkness. There is much we don’t know that could help us when we are in the dark, but we must pursue this knowledge through Bible study and meditation.

Pr 29:18 Where there is no vision (revelation), the people perish:”

Ho 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:”

DELIVERED FROM THE DARKNESS OF SATAN: Satan is the prince of this world:

Eph 2:2, “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:”

He works behind the scenes to confuse, deceive, and destroy. Darkness is his element. He does his work of deception where there is no light. His main desire is to prevent our knowledge of God’s truth. He attempts to persuade us to distort and change God’s word (Gen. 3) so that the desires of our flesh will no longer be against biblical truth and we’ll believe everything is okay. Satan is then successful in his efforts to hold us in ignorance of God’s word. In this state, we are often tempted but, through deliverance, we are no longer under the power of his kingdom. He is no longer our king. We now serve the King of kings and Lord of lords. STEP INTO THE LIGHT!

Next week we’ll discover what we have received since we have been delivered from the power of darkness. God bless, Pastor Hill.
