ROCKINGHAM — Tyrannia Ellerbe had know idea a planned gathering for a few would attract such a large crowd.

Yet that’s exactly what’s happened in the first three years of her annual Easter Egg hunt. Last year at her Little Street home, nearly 450 children showed up. It was time, Ellerbe figured, to find a new venue.

“I didn’t expect that many,” she said this week as she ramps up plans for the fourth annual event. “I started praying.

Her faith paid off.

“Not one child left without something,” Ellerbe said.

This year’s event is set to begin at noon on Monday, April 6. The hunt will begin informally a few hours later.

There will one key change in store for the children. The hunt will now take place at Falling Creek Park on Hood Street. Pretty much everything else will remain the same. The hunt is still free, all are invited and the day-long affair will include trampolines, bounce houses, food and more.

Ellerbe launched the event with the help of a number of groups, including Sister Circle, PG’s Young Soldiers and Women of Color Who Uplift and United. This year, to help cover the cost of the event, Ellerbe is seeking contributions — cash is great, but equally appreciated are food coupons or food donations.

For additional information or to support the event, call Ellerbe at 910-461-8131.
