HAGERSTOWN — Obadiah Miller was the ninth and final person to register for the inaugural Talk Turkey Tourney disc golf event on Thursday at Ditto Farms Disc Golf Course in Hagerstown.

The 25-year-old from Orrstown, Pa., did so with only four minutes to spare before online registration closed two hours before the 10 a.m. tee time.

He’s probably pretty thankful he did. Miller carded a field-best 10 birdies and finished with a seven under par 48 to lead the Men’s Advanced Division in the Thanksgiving Day event from the short tee pads to the red baskets. Jason Kuch, 33, of Chambersburg, Pa., placed second, only one stroke back with a 49 and Matt Swartz, 39, of Chambersburg, placed third (50). Both Kuch and Swartz tallied seven birdies apiece to earn podium finishes.

Brandon Estep, 18, of Shippensburg, Pa., placed fourth in the Men’s Advanced Division with a 51, which included six birdies.

The seven adult players in the field were assigned to their respective divisions based on the results of basket numbers 1-6. At that point, Miller and Kuch were tied for first with 17 strokes each, while Swartz and Estep were tied for third (18).

Boys’ Division

Josiah Spradlin, 14, of Frostburg, was one stroke back in fifth place (19) but he and little brother Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 10, were automatically in the Boys’ Division as players under the age of 18. The older Spradlin finished with a personal best 57, three strokes better than his previous best of 60 thrown on July 23. Spradlin-Vogelsang, meanwhile, chopped seven strokes off his previous best of 75, also thrown four months ago, to finish the holiday round with a 68.

Men’s Rec Division

Noah Spradlin, 24, of Frostburg, edged out his dad, Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, for first place with a three over par 58. The younger Spradlin’s effort was consistent, as he carded even splits of 29 on both the front nine and the back nine. The elder Spradlin, meanwhile, threw a 30 and 29 to finish with a 59. That aligns with his average of 59.3 over 15 rounds on the layout.

Anthony Miller, 37, of Mercersburg, Pa., finished third with a 60, including even splits of 30 and 30.

Noah Spradlin and Miller were tied with 20 apiece over holes 1-6, while Kevin Spradlin was last among adults with a 22 over the same span.

CTP contest

Kevin Spradlin won the CTP contest, while Jason Kuch placed second, and Matt Swartz edged out Brandon Estep by centimeters for third place. Kuch and Brandon Estep each had two throws, as they brought canned goods to the event that will be donated to the Washington County Community Action Council’s food pantry.

Division winners were able to select a disc from several options, including discs signed by legendary disc golfers JohnE McCray, Paige Pierce and Sarah Hokom, and a third disc signed by Scott Stokeley. Miller chose a Latitude 64 Balista signed by McCray. Noah Spradlin chose the Axiom glow Crave signed by Hokum and Pierce, while Josiah Spradlin chose a Streamline Pilot.

Podium finishers in each division also were able to select a new disc, and CTP winners selected from a stash of new MVP Lab Seconds.

The event was created on Monday, only three days before Thanksgiving. Entry was $10 each. All nine players enjoyed a sunny morning with a temperature near 50 degrees and mostly negligible winds.
