FROSTBURG — Someone actually managed to keep up with Sam Wolodkin on the back nine.

But the 21-year-old Frostburg resident had built up a large enough lead on the front nine that it didn’t matter.

Wolodkin carded 10 birdies en route to a convincing glow round on Halloween night at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg. He finished with an eight under par 46. Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, and Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, tied for second (49) in the Men’s Advanced Division and Brian Padovini, 43, of Frostburg, was fourth (54). Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, represented the Men’s Rec Division well with six birdies and a three under par 51. Shreve posted the only bogey-free round on the night.

It ended well for Wolodkin, but it didn’t start out great for him.

Wolodkin was the only one in the five-player field to bogey the very first basket of the night. He settled for par on the next two baskets. Through three holes, Wolodkin was tied with Kevin Spradlin for last — four strokes behind Noah Spradlin and two behind Shreve and Padovini.

At that point, though, Wolodkin found a groove — one that no one else could match. He birdied No. 4 (as did two others), threw for par on  No. 5 (as did three others), and then proceeded to throw six straight birdies. No one else matched that.

Wolodkin needed only 23 strokes to get through the front nine. At that point, he held a two-stroke lead over Shreve and Noah Spradlin (25 each), while Kevin Spradlin and Padovini were at 26 apiece.

Wolodkin opened up the back nine with consecutive birdies. Only Kevin Spradlin kept pace. But No. 3 caused more than a little angst for Spradlin, who needed nine strokes to get through No. 3 both times around. Wolodkin, meanwhile, settled for par and then rattled off three more birdies to pull away from the field.

Wolodkin threw even splits of 23 and 23. Shreve threw 25 and 25, while Kevin Spradlin went 26 and 23. Noah Spradlin (25 and 26) and Padovini (26 and 28) rounded out the field.

CTP

Noah Spradlin won CTP with a solid drive on No. 1 the second time around. He chose a $5 coupon to the Allegany County Disc Golf Club store as his prize.
