Warder sets course record in 2nd straight win

Spradlin-Vogelsang, Huff lead Youth Division

FROSTBURG — David Warder smashed the Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course record during league play and led a field of 10 players during a casual round with the Allegany County Disc Golf Club on Monday night in Frostburg.

Warder, 32, of Frostburg carded a 10 under par 44 — seven strokes ahead of runner-up Tim Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., who tallied a 51. Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, and Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, tied for third, each finishing with a 52. The Frostburg son-father duo of Noah Spradlin, 23, and Kevin Spradlin, 43, placed fifth and sixth with a 53 and 54, respectively, while Sam Wolodkin, 20, of Frostburg, rounded out the adult field with a 59.

Warder’s mark beats the previous club course record of 46, set by Shreve in the first scheduled club round on opening day of the Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course eight days earlier. Further, Warder’s back nine mark of 21 — which included six birdies — sets another club record, beating Shreve’s previous best of 22, also set on May 14.

Warder finished with 10 birdies (55.6 percent). In comparison, Shreve recorded seven birdies and the first ace in course history (on No. 2 the second time around). On Monday, Warder nearly equaled Shreve’s result. Warder’s card started on No. 3. Warder was first, and his throw sailed directly to the basket, hit the pole hard and bounced a few feet away from the pin. Kevin Spradlin, who finished sixth overall, was second in the birdie count with six, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Farris with four each.

With his second straight club win, Warder marked himself as a top contender for the club’s Player of the Month award along with Shreve (a win, two runner-ups and a tie for third) and Gary Schultz Jr. (a Youth League win, and a Youth Division third-place finish). But there’s plenty of disc golf left to play this month as the club five more casual rounds scheduled in May, including the first two glow rounds at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course.

Youth Division

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, led the three-player youth division with a 37 over nine baskets. He threw for par four times and a bogey three other times while leading his card that included fellow Youth Division players and Frostburg residents Karli Huff, 13, and Gary Schultz Jr., 10.

Huff, meanwhile, squeezed past Schultz to finish second with a 43 while Schultz placed third with a 46. It was both players’ first time playing at Hoffman Park. Huff carded par on No. 8 and finished with three bogeys (Nos. 1, 6 and 9).

Schultz made par on No. 3 and threw bogeys on  Nos. 1, 2, 8 and 9.
