* Round 2 (5/15): Raynor redeems himself, earns victory

FROSTBURG — David Warder threw four birdies on the back nine to catch up to, then pull away from, Bill Shreve and the field to earn an Allegany County Disc Golf Club casual round victory on Tuesday night at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg.

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, putts for a birdie attempt on No. 6.

Warder, 32, of Frostburg, caught Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, with a birdie on No. 13. Shreve took the lead right back on the very next hole with a birdie of his own. Basket No. 16 — No. 7 the second time around — was the difference, as Warder carded his fourth birdie of the day while Shreve threw for bogey. The two-stroke swing gave Warder the lead with only two holes remaining. Both players took five strokes to finish up the round of 18.

Warder tallied a five under par 49, edging out Shreve (50) by one stroke. Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, finished third with a 52. It was his third consecutive round of 52 in as many days. Further, it was the third straight round that he has thrown an even 26 on both the front nine and the back nine. Spradlin, who has been playing the game for 11 months, came within inches of his first ace and matching the family record of 51. His forehand drive on the No. 18 tee hit chains on the back side of the basket and fell to the ground. Not one to often offer a reaction for good shots or bad, Spradlin turned from the basket and crouched to the ground, holding his hands to his head in disbelief.

Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, started off hot — he had a lead of between two and five strokes on the field after only three holes. Unfortunately, reality in the form of bad throws and guardian trees struck hard. He was in fifth place at the midway point and took fourth overall with a 55.

The husband and wife duo of Tim and Shania Farris, both 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., tied for fifth. Each carded a 56 though they flip-flopped on how they did it. Tim Farris threw a 27 on the front nine to Shania’s 29, while the two traded those scores on the back nine.

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, carded a 29 on the front nine — putting him within reach of his first sub-60 score on any course — but ran into trouble three times on the back nine. The Beall Elementary School fourth-grader threw for triple bogey on No. 13 and double bogeys on Nos. 14 and 17 to finish with a 65.

Stephanie Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, rounded out the eight-player field with a 68. It was her second time on the course and first time playing 18 holes at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course, which opened over the weekend. She threw an eight over par 35 on the front nine and improved by two strokes over the final nine holes, including her first birdie.

Tim Farris’ name was randomly selected in the drawing for a custom-stamped Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course disc.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club returns to action at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course on Monday, May 22. Tee time is 5:30 p.m. The round is open to the general public and club members alike, and is free for all. For more information, call/text 301-338-4533.

The club has six remaining rounds on its May schedule. All six take place in Frostburg, and two of them are glow rounds. With the first four rounds of the month having four different winners — Gary Schultz Jr. won Week 5 of the Spring Youth League, while Shreve, Keith Raynor and Warder have earned individual wins over the past three nights. The club’s Player of the Month award for May is still very much up for grabs.
