FROSTBURG — Well that didn’t take long.

The first day of the second year of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club kicked off in style, and Bill Shreve continued his birthday month celebration with the first ace during an organized round on Sunday evening at the newly opened Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg.

The Cumberland resident, who turned 47 last week, was only 51 minutes into the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s casual round when he nailed a straight shot on No. 11 — No. 2 the second time around on the nine-hole course — 125 feet from tee pad to pin for the ace.

Bill Shreve, 47, of Cumberland, holds up his Innova Roc3 after the sixth ace of his disc golf life – and the first, by anyone, at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg.

He threw an Innova Roc3 disc and said he will soon retire the disc after he orders a replacement.

The ace, his second in four days, second with the Allegany County Disc Golf Club and sixth of his disc golf life, pushed his lead to four strokes over Scott Mallery and five over Colby Mallery with seven baskets remaining. Shreve held on for the win, holding off the Mount Savage father-son duo by three strokes and carded seven birdies, plus an ace, to finish with an eight under par 46. Shreve has thrown Innova discs for all six of his lifetime aces.

Scott Mallery, 54, and Colby Mallery, 19, each finished with a 49. Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, placed fourth with a 51. Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, was a stroke behind with a 52. Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, placed sixth with a 59 while young Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, rounded out the seven-player field with a 63.

A few notes. First, it was the middle Spradlin’s personal best on the layout, as he threw a 53 late last week while volunteering with course work. The youngest Spradlin, meanwhile, led the field — by between one and three strokes — after two holes as he opened up with consecutive birdies.

Scott Mallery tallied six birdies, while Colby Mallery followed up with five, to finish tied for second. Kevin Spradlin finished with four birdies and only one bogey (No. 15).

Noah Spradlin finished the round with four birdies while Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang earned three birdies, with all of them coming on the front nine.

Shreve led by three strokes over Scott Mallery and Kevin Spradlin after the front nine, 22 to 25. Colby Mallery and Noah Spradlin were tied for fourth (26), while Raynor and Spradlin-Vogelsang were tied for sixth (30). The 63 was Spradlin-Vogelsang’s best score of any 18-hole course he’s ever played. His previous best was a 68, thrown twice (Jan. 8, 2023, and Feb. 22, 2023) from the 18 short tees at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage.

Three players — both Mallery players and Raynor — scored better the second time around the course. Colby Mallery threw three strokes better (26 / 23), while Scott Mallery (25 / 24) an Raynor (30 / 29) each improved by one stroke. Noah Spradlin threw the same 26 on both ends, including two birdies and a bogey on each side.

Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course, owned and operated by the City of Frostburg, is the first public disc golf course in Allegany County. It is an Innova-driven Ace Place, and with friendly distances for beginners, billed as “an invitation to play disc golf.

There are three private courses open for play in Allegany County, one under construction and a fifth in the planning stages.

Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, led the other six players the field (with a combined age of 233 years, an average of 38.8) after two holes. Only one other player (Bill Shreve) had more birdies than he did on the front nine.

Colby Mallery was randomly selected as winner of the Innova DX Shark disc with the custom Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course stamp.

Noah Spradlin on the No. 1 tee.

Keith Raynor with a rare backhand.

Bill Shreve on the tee on No. 5 which, at 223 feet, is the longest on the nine-hole course.
