MOUNT SAVAGE — Isaiah Gaughan punched in a putt on No. 4 for one of only two birdies on the day on among four teams in Week 2 of Spring Youth League on Friday evening at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage.

Gaughan, 11, of Cumberland, teamed up with Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, to win with a score of 51. They edged Stephanie Spradlin, 42, of Frostburg, who played Cali style, by a single stroke as she finished with a 52. Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, and Lily Dillinger, 14, of Romney, W.Va., placed third with a 58 while Noah Gaughan, 12, of Cumberland, and Tristian Dillinger, 11, of Romney, rounded out the four-team field with a 63. The three teams and Spradlin (in Cali style) completed 14 holes. Parents January Dillinger and Matt Dillinger, of Romney, stopped after 12 holes to attend to other matters.

After the front nine, though, the Dillinger parental units were right in the thick of things. The pair, along with Spradlin and Gaughan, plus Spradlin Cali-style, all were tied atop the leaderboard with a four under par 32. Spradlin-Vogelsang and Dillinger were at 40 and Gaughan and Dillinger were only two strokes behind them with a 42.

Team Gaughan-Spradlin finished with a birdie and threw for par seven other times. Team Dillinger-Dillinger also threw a birdie, along with five par saves, over 12 holes. Spradlin threw for par six times, while Team Gaughan-Dillinger threw for par three times.

The format for the 90-minute session was alternate shot. Player A started on the tee and the teammates worked their disc towards the basket. Once completed, Player B then drove from tee No. 2. Teammates alternated taking turns driving.

Some were going for the win. Others experimented with different types of throws and grips — which might not have paid off on Friday, but the knowledge gained certainly will leave a lasting impression the next time they’re on the course.

The older Gaughan won closest-to-the-pin (CTP) when he threw a Gateway Mystic midrange towards the blue basket from the edge of Mile Lane. The disc hit the wooden triangle and rolled a few feet away, but not far enough away to not be closest to the basket. He was awarded a Full Turn mid-range disc.

Week 3 of Spring Youth League tees off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21 at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.

Noah Gaughan’s throw here won the CTP contest to the blue basket.
