Von Hagel rolls in club record glow turnout

Shreve, Raynor tie for 2nd
Next club round March 12 at 2 p.m. at The Glades

CUMBERLAND — It was, by and large, met with a sigh of relief when it was announced that Tuesday night’s glow round would be 18 baskets from the short tees. Ethan von Hagel, for one, said he had been looking forward to the long tees.

He didn’t need to worry.

Von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland, dominated on the front nine and held on during the back nine to win the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s 11th glow round in club history with a five under par 49. The 10 players in a glow round set a club record. The previous best was eight players on Dec. 13, 2022. The round was also the first time the club had all players throw 18 from the short holes at Central, and served as sort of a break — nine of the 10 players in the field Tuesday night had played in the tournament three days earlier.

The round took place under the light of a brilliant Lenten Moon, the full moon which occurrs 13 days before the spring equinox. It’s also known as the “Worm Moon.”

Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, and Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, were the only other players under par. They tied for second, each notching a 53. Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, placed fourth with a 55 and son Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, was one place and two strokes behind with a 57. Ethan Shreve, 19, of Cumberland, placed sixth with a 58 while reigning club Player of the Month Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., edged husband Tim Farris, 26, by a stroke. Shania finished with a 59 while Tim tallied 60. Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, walked away with a 72. Nicki Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, rounded out the 10-person field with a 75. For Spradlin-Vogelsang, the mark was three strokes shy of his personal best of 69 at Central and one of the few times he’s thrown for par. Par for Youth Division players from 18 short tees at Central is 72.

Von Hagel, fresh off his shared win with Colby Mallery at the inaugural Allegany County Doubles Championship on Saturday, notched six of his seven birdies on the front nine en route to a three-stroke lead at the midway point over Kevin Spradlin. Bill Shreve was a stroke behind in third place, while Raynor and Noah Spradlin were tied at 27.

It was a different story on the back nine, though not different enough to change the final result. Raynor and Tim Farris led the charge, each with a one under par 26, to close the gap as much as they could. Raynor had two of his three birdies on the back nine, while Farris birdied three of the final four holes.

With the win, von Hagel takes the early lead among 10 other contenders (so far) for club Player of the Month consideration for March. However, six organized rounds remain on the club calendar for the month and all count towards the monthly award. In addition, players can also complete a Fisher Cup round in Fairmont, W.Va., for additional consideration.

Scorecard results of the club’s glow round on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Central Assembly of God DGC in Cumberland, Maryland.
