FROSTBURG — This year’s doubles season offered several new aspects.

Instead of one long, 18-week season, competition was broken up into two, nine-week sessions: Fall Doubles League and Winter Doubles League. In addition, a points system tweak after Fall Doubles League helped to keep players in the standings a little closer. Lastly, the 2021-22 doubles season was under the umbrella of another organization; the 2022-23 season was the first under the Allegany County Disc Golf Club, which was founded on May 14, 2022.

Colby Mallery is the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s MVP for the 2022-23 doubles season.

But one thing remained at a near-constant: Colby Mallery was on the podium every time he played.

The 19-year-old Mount Savage resident played in 16 of 18 weeks and accumulated the most points among 31 players to win the club’s Most Valuable Player in the combined doubles season. Last year, Bill Shreve won MVP honors in the 18-week format.

This time, Mallery finished nine points behind Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, for first place overall in Fall Doubles League, 98-89. Mallery accumulated his points in only eight weeks to Shreve’s nine. With his spot in the inaugural Allegany County Doubles Championship secure, Shreve took a couple weeks off from Winter Doubles League play to compete in out-of-town tournaments.

The move worked swimmingly for Mallery, who continued to dominate. Mallery finished in the top three in weekly play all 16 weeks he competed. He and his weekly partner — there were seven of them in all — finished in first place on nine occasions (including Week 9 of FDL in a playoff), in second place three times (finishing on the wrong end of two playoff efforts), and in third place four other times.

Mallery finished with a total of 137 points in 16 weeks of play. Shreve finished second with 127 points in 15 weeks, placing first in FDL and sixth in WDL. Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, was third — and led the Rec Division — with 124 points over 18 weeks, including a third-place finish overall in FDL and tied for fourth overall in WDL. Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, finished third in the Advanced Division standings and fourth overall with 109 points in only 12 weeks of play. He finished fourth overall in FDL play and was seventh during an injury-plagued WDL campaign.

Rounding out the top 10 in the combined 18-week season: 5. Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg (93); 6. Noah Davis, 9, of Frostburg (86); 7. Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg (83); 8. (tie) David Warder, 32, of Frostburg, and Ethan von Hagel, 20, of Cumberland 959); 10. (tie) Keith Raynor, 46, of Vale Summit, and Tim Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va. (48).

Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, was the top female, accumulating 42 points over nine weeks of WDL play, good for 11th overall. Neither she nor her husband played in Fall Doubles League.

Colby Mallery will be presented with a custom plaque in the near future just as Shreve was following the 2021-22 season.

Determining Colby Mallery’s strength between driving and putting is difficult, as he seems pretty good at both.

Bill Shreve tallied the seocnd-most points during the entire 18-week doubles season in only 15 weeks of play.
