FROSTBURG — There are no baskets installed, and absolutely zero clearing of deadfall or small diameter trees that will make for smooth, graceful fairways.

Still, wooden stakes are set at the tentative locations at Hoffman Park Ace Place Disc Golf Course for nine tee pads and nine baskets, and it’s hoped that players have a go at throwing the first public disc golf course in Allegany County in order to provide feedback. Until the baskets are in, virtually  nothing is set in stone (or concrete). On Thursday, March 10, Innova-affiliated Brad Lescalleet spent more than three hours in Frostburg laying the foundation for the pitch-and-putt course.

“This isn’t going to be a travel/destination course by any means,” Lescalleet said, “but for a local community course, it’s going to do the job of drawing people in, giving experienced players a place to practice their approach and touch shots, and give new players enough opportunities for success that they want to come back and try again.”

A public disc golf course quickly moved up the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s list of priorities in Spring 2022. The club was founded on May 14, and within a week the club met with Brian Vought, director of the City of Frostburg Parks and Recreation Department. It was at that time Vought informed the club of the steps necessary to go through the request for approval process.

The park is located on Hoffman Hollow Road near the Frostburg Industrial Park. The first tee is located near the park entrance, between the road and the pavilion, and a wooden stake is marked with a “1.” The course follows a general horseshoe shape for the first six baskets, then players begin turning back into the woods, from the power line area, for the final three baskets. As currently laid out, players will traverse 1,415 feet over nine baskets. Distances between tee pads and pins range between 110 feet and 220 feet, with an average of 157 feet.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club is looking forward to adding the course to its current rotation of courses played on in Allegany and Garrett counties, including in Lonaconing, Cumberland, Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage, and The Glades at Meshach Run in Accident. The club intends to schedule rounds for Summer Flex League, youth leagues, glow rounds and special events at Hoffman Park Ace Place DGC.

With a few volunteer work days being planned for April, it’s possible the course is ready to play during a soft opening in late April. The Allegany County Disc Golf Club and the City of Frostburg plan to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a later date, possibly in May.

Players should exercise caution if traversing the terrain. As stated, there has been no clearing done. There are rocks, roots and sharp objects, such as thorns, to catch on clothing. The fairways are far from smooth and open. However, the club is seeking feedback more about what play could be with the proper vegetation cleared, including deadfall. The club has notes provided by Lescalleet regarding his recommendations on how to prepare each tee pad, fairway and basket site for each of the nine holes. Lescalleet emphasized that his notes are merely recommendations, and includes nothing that should be considered final at this time.

Players who walk or throw discs while on the course who want to submit feedback should email alleganyplayground@gmail.com or send a text to 301-338-4533. There is no assurance that any or all ideas will be implemented; however, the one guarantee is that the ideas not submitted for consideration will not be considered at all. In addition, the club will have guided rounds several times over the next few weeks, and the public is welcome to participate.

Course designer Brad Lescalleet provided notes about each tee pad area, fairway and tentative basket placement. Players who walk or throw the course while wooden stakes are in should be reminded there is much work still to be done.
