FROSTBURG — The Allegany County Disc Golf Club is proud to announce a partnership with Missouri-based Gateway Disc Sports that will propel the club into its second year and beyond.

The working relationship between the club and the 28-year-old disc manufacturer will assist the club, founded in May 2022, in providing affordable, high-quality discs to local players. Disc sales will generate a revenue stream for the club. Sales proceeds will support community and youth outreach and many other activities the club has planned. Gateway discs will be the club’s choice of plastic that participants in upcoming youth clinics receive.

The Wizard is a true, stable workhorse putter. It holds whatever line you throw it on with very little fade during its drop. It also works as a great putter in windy conditions and handles controlled power very well. This makes it an excellent choice off the tee for mid-range drives in addition to upshots.

Gateway offers more than two dozen different molds in a wide variety of plastic blends and flexes, ranging from tacky and super soft to firm and premium diamond and platinum blends. New nylon discs also will soon be available. Popular putters include the Wizard, Warlock and Voodoo; top-selling midranges include the Demon, Warrior, Prophecy, Element and Mystic; favorite fairway drivers include the Blaze, Sabre, Blade, Assasin and Spear; and preferred distance drivers include the Samurai, Journey, Speed Demon, Illusion and Spirit.

The non-exclusive partnership means the Allegany County Disc Golf Club will continue to join whenever possible with retail outlets such as Mount Savage-based Mile Lane Disc Golf, a local retailer featuring MVP, Axiom and Streamline discs. Mile Lane Disc Golf was critical to the success of the club’s first tournament earlier this month. The deal gives the club maximum flexibility when it comes to providing affordable discs to new and experienced players alike.

Gateway Disc Sports was founded in 1994 by David McCormack and built on a passion for growing the sport. The Allegany County Disc Golf Club wholeheartedly shares that passion and aims to provide new opportunities for both new and experienced players to play their game of choice. The club has spearheaded the effort to open the first public disc golf course in Allegany County; Hoffman Park Ace Place Disc Golf Course is expected to open to play by May 1.

The club’s first order includes more than a dozen options and includes glow discs. The club has available the Wizard, Element, Mystic, Chief, Devil Hawk, Magic, Spear, Voodoo and more. Some club members will be asked to field test (and/or buy) the discs in order for the club to determine which discs the club will pursue for youth clinics and other community outreach events in 2023 and beyond.

The move strengthens long-existing ties for Spradlin family to Missouri. Extended family members have called the Show Me State home for generations, and the Spradlins themselves at one point lived only 30 minutes from Maryland Heights, the St. Louis suburb which is home to Gateway Disc Sports. Noah Spradlin, the newest Spradlin to pick up the game, played baseball in Maryland Heights as a child.

“Gateway is the place for you,” one Gateway Disc Sports fan told the club.

Gateway has teams of both ambassadors and pro players, including Lindsay Fish, Noah Fiveash, Amy Lewis, Ben Kroll, CJ King and Danny Beauchamp, among others.

One of the club’s longer range goals is to field a competitive youth team on the club level. The idea is to begin with student-athletes in grades 5 through 9 within 18 to 24 months. The club has started the process to become a “sister club” with a disc golf group in southwest Missouri for when that happens. On a three-year cycle, the plan is to have a competition in Missouri one year, Maryland the next, and at a location somewhere between Missouri and Maryland in the third year.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club will become a wholesaler for Gateway Disc Sports and has received its first shipment. Some of these discs, and others, could soon be available for purchase.
