Shreve holds off Farris in night of ‘bests’

Next glow round: Friday (2/24) in Lonaconing
WDL Week 9 set for 2 p.m. tee time at Mile Lane

* 12/31 — Shreve’s sets PR on New Year’s Eve
* 2/10 — Warder beats par and everyone else
* 2/17 — Shania beats Tim and the field

MOUNT SAVAGE — Bill Shreve is a pretty good disc golf player. So when he throws a personal best, he has a legitimate reason to think he’ll be in the hunt for first place in a field of local disc golf talent.

During a New Year’s Eve glow round about seven weeks ago, however, the 46-year-old Cumberland resident threw a personal best 52 on the 18-hole layout from the short tees at Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage and finished in second place by a single stroke.

Shreve seemed to take that lesson to heart on Wednesday night, back at Mile Lane on the same layout. And though he threw a personal best by five strokes, he still had to look over his shoulder every step of the way.

Shreve shaved off five strokes to record a personal best seven under par, but he was in second place at the midway point. Shania Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, W.Va., and Kevin Spradlin, 44, of Frostburg, had each posted a five under par 22 on the front nine. Shreve was one stroke back at 23. Tim Farris, 26, of Wiley Ford, was at 24, while Jay Goodman, 20, of Frostburg, had a 27 and Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg, had a 31.

Most of the field faded over the back nine, but not Shania Farris. She had come close to beating husband Tim in a Fisher Cup round at Woodsboro earlier this month, finishing one stroke behind. She faced the same deficit on Feb. 18 during the couple’s first round in Lonaconing, and a glow one at that. Shania had been ahead of Tim until a triple bogey on the next-to-last basket.

Shania beat Tim — and the field — on Feb. 17. The difference was still the same, but this time Shania was one stroke better than Tim.

On Wednesday night at Mile Lane during the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s third glow round of the year, Tim was there — even he will attest to that — but Shania had her sights set squarely on catching Shreve. She almost pulled it off.

While the rest of the field faded over the back nine, Shreve and Farris were in a proverbial dog fight of a disc golf contest while enduring a temperature about the high 30s with plenty of mud on the course from two days of recent rain. Neither fighter let that be a bother.

While Shania held a one-stroke lead after the front nine, Shreve —an ever-patient predator — struck quickly at the start of the back nine. Two consecutive birdies helped him pick up a stroke each on No. 10 (for the tie) and No. 11 (for a one-stroke lead). Farris forced a tie when she birdied No. 13, but she fell a stroke behind when she bogeyed No. 15. The two matched wits — and strokes — on the final three baskets to put the final touches on Shreve’s one-stroke win.

Shreve finished with a 47. Farris was one stroke back with a 48 — seven strokes under her previous best of 55 set on Feb. 17. Kevin Spradlin was third with a 50, one stroke better than his personal best on Dec. 31, 2022. Goodman and Tim Farris tied for fourth, each with a 54 (both personal best marks), while Spradlin-Vogelsang matched his personal best mark of 68, set on Jan. 8.

Allegany County Disc Golf Club glow rounds are open to the public and free to all players. The next one is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 at Living Waters Life Center in Lonaconing.

The club wraps up its Winter Doubles League with Week 9 at Mile Lane Disc Golf on Sunday, Feb. 26. The club hosts its inaugural Allegany County Disc Golf Doubles Championship on Saturday, March 4, with Round 1 in Cumberland and Round 2 in Mount Savage.

The club will release its March schedule of casual, non-league rounds in the next few days.
