MOUNT SAVAGE — Once upon a time, Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang was an athlete who could not stand to practice or compete when it was cold, rainy or muddy.

On Saturday in the fifth and final week of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Youth League, the 9-year-old Frostburg resident had to face all three weather conditions at once.

He smiled. And he thrived.

Iced sugar cookies from a local bakery helped players stave off the cold after 12 holes of disc golf in Mount Savage.

Due to the odd number of players in the field, Spradlin-Vogelsang was one of two players to team up with Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg. The pair finished first in a five-team doubles field with a score of 41, five over par, along 12 holes from the short tees at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage. Players competed in a pure alternate format, which means Player A on a team drove from the tee and Player B would throw from where Player A’s disc landed. Each two-person team would alternate until the disc made its way from the tee pad to the basket. There was no limit on the number of consecutive drives a specific player could throw from the tee.

The goal was to speed up the pace of play, but Spradlin-Vogelsang, who threw a personal best 45 through 12 holes last week — by himself —wanted to stay on the course and continue the competition. Instead, he and the other players chose to enjoy sugar cookies from a local bakery, complete with an edible version of the club’s logo on top. Spradlin-Vogelsang and Spradlin threw for par on seven of 12 holes, including six in a row from  No. 5 through No. 10.

Spradlin and his second teammate, Baylen Langan, 8, of Corriganville, finished second in the standings with a 44. The pair managed a birdie on No. 3, one of only two birdies thrown by any team on the day.

The duo of Chance Troutman, 13, of Corriganville, and Josiah Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, finished in third place with a 52. The score was two strokes ahead of “Noah squared” — the team consisting of Frostburg residents Noah Davis, 8, and Noah Spradlin, 23, who finished with a 54. That score included the only other birdie of the round.

Lily Lick, 9, and dad Sam Lick, 30, of Cumberland, rounded out the field with a score of 60. Lick was announced as the club’s Player of the Month for September. In four Youth League weeks last month, Lick was the only player — of any age — to improve on her average number of strokes per hole in four consecutive weeks. She received an MVP disc golf bag, an Envy putter, and a mini for her efforts.

Five players — Spradlin-Vogelsang, Davis, Langan, Troutman and Lick — were recognized for perfect attendance during the five-week league. Each player was awarded an MVP disc by the club. Davis was randomly selected as winner of an MVP disc golf bag.

Players were happy with their performance, which aims to be a segue into the start of the club’s Fall Doubles League beginning Oct. 23 at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course. League play will rotate between courses in Mount Savage, at Central in Cumberland, and at The Glades at Meshach Run in Accident through the end of the year. Winter Doubles League competition begins Jan. 1.
