MOUNT SAVAGE — In a lighthearted accusation, some suggested that Scott Mallery finished atop the leaderboard of the 10th and final week of Saturday Morning Tag League because it’s his town and, more importantly, it’s his course. He designed and built it.

Of course, something could be said for talent, ability and practice.

Mallery, the 53-year-old Mount Savage resident and owner of Mile Lane Disc Golf, capped the inaugural season of Saturday Morning Tag League with an 11 under par 64, two strokes ahead of Derek Hunter, of Bedford, Pa.

Colby Mallery, 19, of Mount Savage, rounded out the podium with a third-place finish with a 69. Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, was fourth (73) and Nic Davies, 26, of Mount Savage, was fifth and the final player under par with a 74. Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, finished sixth — and last — with his fourth time scoring a season-high 79 (and first 79 since Week 4).

It was the elder Mallery’s third SMTL win. He won Week 1 with a 63, and lowered his best in league play in Week 6 with a 61. Mallery, the only player to compete in all 10 weeks, finished with a season average of 65.9.

Though SMTL 2022 is finished, Mallery and Mile Lane Disc Golf will host the second annual Ace Race on Saturday, Nov. 26. See the flyer for details, or call Mallery at 304-790-9987. The $30 fee per player includes a special, one-disc-only round of 12 holes from the short (blue) tees afterwards, and two MVP glow discs. As of Saturday morning, the field — capped at 24 players — had 15 names on it.

Meanwhile, Mile Lane — along with the courses at Central in Cumberland and The Glades at Meshach Run in Accident — will be utilized by the Allegany County Disc Golf Club for Fall Doubles League starting Oct. 23.

Scott Mallery finished the inaugural season of Saturday Morning Tag League right where he started — with the No. 1 tag.

Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, drives from the No. 1 long tee on Saturday. Though he didn’t score as well as he wanted, the weather was tough to beat — low 60s, sunny and dry.
