CUMBERLAND — Before Saturday, Noah Gaughan had never thrown a plastic disc towards a metal basket.
But when his putter hit the chains on the fourth hole from the edge of Circle 1 — nearly 30 feet away from the pin — the usually stoic 11-year-old couldn’t help but break into a giant grin. A few high fives later, and Gaughan hurried to the basket to pick up his putter. It was a disc, and a memory, worth holding on to.

It’s moments like that which comprised Week 2 of the Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Youth Disc Golf League at Central in Cumberland. Gaughan finished tied for third in the Advanced Division. Both he and Noah Davis, 8, of Frostburg, threw a 33. Josiah Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, finished atop the leaderboard with a 24 while little brother Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, placed second with a 29.
In the Rec Division, 13-year-old Chance Troutman, of Corriganville, won with a score of 37. Little brother Baylen Langan, 9, was second (39) while Isaiah Gaughan, 10, of Cumberland, was third with a 53.
Lily Lick, 9, of Cumberland, finished first in the Girls’ Division with a 46.
Players are assigned divisions based on the outcome of the first two weeks of league play. Assigned divisions could change as play continues.
Though six of the eight players completed nine holes, the scores are based off the first seven holes as. Based on the six players’ scores on holes 8 and 9, however, the order of finishers would not have changed had all eight players completed nine baskets.
This was the last week the Youth League is at Central. Play will wrap up on the following three Saturdays — Sept. 17, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 — at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage. Tee time is 4 p.m.
League play is free, and there is no commitment for players to complete a certain number of weeks.
