MOUNT SAVAGE — Noah Davis figured out that sometimes, a backhand throw is simply not the shot he wants to make.

So the 8-year-old Frostburg resident had an impromptu forehand lesson with friend and soccer teammate Luke Spradlin-Vogelsang on Saturday in the hay field across from Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage, minutes before the start of Week 3 Youth League disc golf action. It was tough to tell how well Davis, a multi-sport athlete, would take to the new throw.

It went quite well.

On his first time at the tree-filled disc golf course, Davis finished with a score of 42 over 10 holes from the blue tees. He finished one stroke ahead of Chance Troutman, 13, of Corriganville, and two strokes ahead of Spradlin-Vogelsang, 9, of Frostburg. Josiah Spradlin, 12, of Frostburg, won for the second straight week, this time with a 35, while Baylen Langan, 9, rounded out the boys’ field with a 58, good for fifth place.

Lily Lick, 9, of Cumberland, won the girls’ division with a 64. She continued to lower her average stroke-per-hole, starting with a 7.67 in Week 1, to 6.57 in Week 2 and a 6.4 average in Week 3.

Each hole is a par 3. Spradlin threw for par six times (60 percent), while Troutman managed par three times, and Davis and Spradlin-Vogelsang once each. Langan threw for bogey on No. 9, as well as on No. 8, a bonus basket. Lick’s best hole was No. 10 (5), though she threw a six on seven other baskets during her first round at the arguably more difficult Mile Lane course.

Parents and friends are welcome to play along with their younger players. Sam Lick and Kevin Spradlin, 43, of Frostburg, tied for first over 10 holes, each scoring a 29. Noah Spradlin, 23, of Frostburg, was third with a 33. Both Lick and the elder Spradlin barely missed out on what would have been their first aces. Lick almost got his from No. 2 to the elevated basket, but the disc hit just right-of-center and splashed out. On No. 3 from the porch to the island hole, Spradlin’s Envy putter seemed to hit dead center, but still went out the back of the chains to land a few feet from the pin.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club’s Youth League continues with a 4 p.m. tee time on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage. Players can arrive at 3 p.m. for an optional hour of instruction. League play is open to the public. There is no cost, and players can borrow discs from the club.
