The Allegany County Disc Golf Club will facilitate two seasons of Double League competition to finish out 2022 and begin 2023. The Fall Doubles League will run from Oct. 23 through Dec. 18.  After a week off for Christmas, the Winter Doubles League will run from Jan. 1 through Feb. 26. Doubles will end with an end-of-season tournament on Saturday, March 4.

For safety and other reasons, play will be a set start time of 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoons throughout both seasons. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Bill Shreve accepts his 2021-22 Fall/Winter Doubles League MVP plaque at basket No. 1 on the course at Central.

Course rotation
Players will compete on three courses — Mile Lane Disc Golf Course in Mount Savage, Central Assembly of God in Cumberland, and The Glades at Meshach Run in Garrett County. The tentative schedule (see below) includes an automatic Weather Plan. That means that, if there is inclement weather on a weekend in which Doubles League play is scheduled for Mile Lane or The Glades and the course at Central is otherwise clear and available, play will automatically be switched to Central. That call will happen by 6 p.m. Saturday each league weekend. Stay tuned to the Allegany County Disc Golf Club page on Facebook, as well as your local radio station, for weather-related announcements.

That said, there were no cancellations due to inclement weather over 18 weeks of play last year. With Central as an automatic “Plan B” option each week, it’s hoped we’ll have similar good fortune this time around. Ultimately, it is up to each player to determine whether or not it is safe for that person to travel to and from the event site in a safe manner. Safety first.

Playing formats
Doubles play can include a wide range of possible formats. In an effort to maximize each player’s potential while relying more on skill than other factors, the club has a list of several different formats to use during each nine-week season. Whenever possible, players will be separated on the course in three distinct divisions: Advanced, Recreation, and Youth. The club can help direct players to the appropriate division when necessary.  The format will be announced on site when registration begins. Some possible formats include:

  • Best shot
  • Worst shot
  • Alternate shot (limited to two consecutive drives), or odd tees/even tees, etc.
  • One disc only round
  • Two discs only
  • Both players must make the putt
  • Combined score
  • Iron Man Scratch Match

This is not an exhaustive list. Players should arrive with a spirit of having fun and working on shot selection and disc selection in a range of scenarios, along with pulling others up when they might need it.

Fee structure
There are some changes to the fee structure this year. The part that remains the same is that the weekly registration fee is $5. Of that $5, $4 goes to the club and $1 towards an ace pot. Proceeds from the funds that go directly to the club will support club operations, as well as the club’s goal of opening a public disc golf course in Allegany County in the first half of 2023 (more on that another day, but we’re hoping players get behind this idea). This year, the weekly $5 registration fee is optional. Keep reading for details.

Weekly prizes
While there will not be a cash payout each week, we’ll try to have a modest prize or two just about every week. Maybe we’ll do CTP, or a longest drive (or a longest disc slide on ice, depending on weather). We’re trying something new here, and we hope you come along for the ride.

Ace pot
One change is that the ace pot will not be paid out to a player once he, or she, records an ace. Instead, the ace pot fund will be held until the end of each nine-week season. The funds will then be distributed equally between all who recorded an ace during the season (in league play). Of course, if a player records a second ace during a league round, that player will be entitled to a second equal share of the ace pot.

Players should note, however, that the $5 registration fee is optional each week. This is, in part, to keep the game affordable and accessible. Of course, if a player decides not to pay the registration fee prior to the start of play on a given Sunday afternoon and hits an ace, the player is not entitled to a share of the ace pot for any week in which the registration fee is not paid.

Playing partners
Players will be paired with partners in a variety of ways. As it was in the 2021-22 season, sometimes pairings will be based in area rankings. Sometimes it will be random, such as “disc flipping,” drawing names from a hat, or using computer-generated pairings. Other times, a player will get to choose his or her partner. Sometimes the best will be paired with the not-so-best, and sometimes we’ll pit the best head-to-head against the next best. Should be a fun season.

MVP Award(s)
As was the case during the 2021-22 doubles season, the Allegany County Disc Golf Club will utilize a points-based scoring system that will allow each player to earn points on a weekly basis. The points will be awarded on a mix of performance and participation. You can read read about last year’s MVP Bill Shreve and how he tallied 65 points over 18 weeks of play (missing only two Sunday afternoons). Shreve recorded a share of first place eight times in 16 weeks, and finished in the top three 13 times.

If there is sufficient participation, we hope to expand the MVP award into different divisions — Advanced, Rec and Youth, male and female for each. It’s important to note that a separate points-based system will be kept for the Fall and Winter leagues. All players will begin play on Jan. 1, 2023, with the same number of points: Zero (0).

End-of-Season Tournament
The club is currently working on the format for the end-of-season tournament for Doubles League competition. There are a few ideas, and sometime shortly after Christmas we should be able to publish details. Stay tuned.

Fire away. Call/text your questions to 301-338-4533 or bring ’em to the next round.
