Mallery’s first league ace secures 2nd place

CUMBERLAND — David Warder topped the field of 14 players to earn a Western Maryland Disc Golf League victory with a score of 46 on Thursday night at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.
Warder, 31, of Frostburg, has held the top spot for five of the first 12 weeks. Season play continues for another 18 weeks into October. Warder currently holds the No. 1 tag for both the Thursday night and Saturday Morning leagues.

Warder’s 9 under par effort included nine birdies. Scott Mallery, 53, of Mount Savage, threw his first league ace on the 213-foot hole from the long tee on No. 14 (white 5). His was the third ace thrown this season.
Overall, the ace helped Mallery separate from Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, and Ethan Von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland. Mallery finished one stroke behind Warder (47) while Shreve and Von Hagel tied for third (49).
Devon Spiker, 19, of Frostburg, and Colby Mallery, 18, of Mount Savage, each threw a 51 to tie for fifth. There was a three-way tie for seventh between Nolan Jones, Brett Workman and Sam Wolodkin, each of whom threw a 53. Seth Wilson, 28, of Cresaptown, rounded out the top 10 with a 54. B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, threw a 56 for 11th place, followed by Sean Fiscus, 20 (60) and Jack Twigg, 19 (63). Tyler (last name unknown) rounded out the field of 14 with a 67.
Warder and Shreve held a one-stroke lead over Mallery after the front nine. Warder extended his lead to two strokes by throwing for birdie on two fo the first three holes on the back nine. Mallery’s ace on No. 14 cut Warder’s lead to one, but the two players matched scores on the final four holes.
League play continues June 9 at Central. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. with a 5:30 p.m. tee time. Play is open to the public. For more information call or text 301-697-7925.
