CUMBERLAND — It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.

Nick Russ might prove that mantra more than anyone else on the local disc golf courses.

The 43-year-old Cumberland man won his straight Thursday night tag league competition by throwing a 10 under par 45 to beat the field of 13 players at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.

In Week 14 of league play, all 13 competitors finished at par (55) or better. Ten players accomplished the same feat in Week 10 of Western Maryland Disc Golf league play.

On Thursday, Russ finished with 10 birdies and had a bogey-free round. Bill Shreve, 46, of Cumberland, finished one stroke behind Russ with a 46. Shreve’s performance included nine birdies. Ethan Von Hagel, 19, of Cumberland, finished in third place with a 7 under par 48. Shreve’s overall effort tied his Week 8 season best.

Shreve held a three-stroke lead over Russ and three others after the front nine with a 7 under par score of 20. For the second straight week, Russ overcame a deficit on the back nine and finished with four straight birdies and took his first lead on No. 18.

David Warder, 31, of Frostburg, tied with Sam Wolodkin, 20, of Frostburg, for fourth place with a 49. It was Wolodkin’s season best performance by four strokes. B.J. Lewis, of Frostburg, placed sixth (50) while Brett Workman (52) took seventh. Devon Spiker, 19, of Frostburg, Nolan Jones and Nic Davies, 25, of Mount Savage, and Jack Twigg, 19, finished in a four-way tie for eighth (53). Scott Mallery, 54, of Mount Savage, threw his new age on his birthday for ninth and Sean Fiscus, 20, rounded out the field with a personal best score of par 55 this season.

League play continues June 23 at Central. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. with a 5:30 p.m. tee time. Play is open to the public.

Western Maryland Disc Golf is hosting its mid-season tournament on June 25. The tournament is also open to the public. The entry fee is $30 for league members and $25 for non-league members. On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by an 18-hole round. Lunch is provided, then players will complete an additional 18 holes in the afternoon.
