FROSTBURG — Austen Phillips collected three hits while Bex Litton, Marcus Cutter and Josiah Spradlin added two hits apiece to lead the Frostburg Boogeymen past the the visiting Westernport Thunder 10-7 on Monday at Frostburg Community Park for their first win of the season.

Cutter (triple) and Spradlin (double) had the team’s only extra base hits. Phillips led the squad on the base paths with five stolen bases while Spradlin had four and Litton had three.

Starting pitcher Josiah Spradlin tossed four innings of one-hit ball, striking out 10 while walking one (and hitting two more). Offensively, Spradlin went 2 for 2 with a double and three runs scored.

It was an unexpected offensive breakout, as the Boogeymen were held to only one hit through their first two games. On Monday, Frostburg scored five times in the first and four more in the second for an early 9-0 lead.

On the mound, starting pitcher Spradlin was nearly untouchable through four innings of work. He struck out 10 of the 16 batters faced, walking just one and giving up just one hit.

The Thunder saw only 10 pitches against Spradlin in the first inning. The leadoff batter bunted, and Spradlin sprinted off the mound and threw to first base for the out. Then he struck out the next two batters swinging.

The next two innings didn’t get much better for Westernport. The leadoff batter managed a walk and stole second and third, but was stranded there as Spradlin struck out the next three hitters, with catcher Phillips picking up the dropped third strike and throwing to first for the out.

Spradlin ran into trouble in the fourth. He plunked the first two batters — both of whom would later score — before striking out the next batter for the first out. Then Spradlin gave up the only hit, a hard-hit single to second base that was mishandled in the field. One Thunder runner scored on the play, ending the shutout and no-hitter all at once.

Spradlin then induced a ground ball to Cutter at first for the second out — a runner scored from third on the play — and struck out the next hitter to end the inning. Spradlin left the mound with a 9-3 lead.

Litton pitched the fifth and sixth innings in relief, allowing one hit and four runs, including two earned, while walking two and striking out six.
