The field can’t keep up with the Jones

CUMBERLAND — Florida native and Frostburg resident Nolan Jones led the field of 12 to victory in Week 6 of Western Maryland Disc Golf league play Thursday evening at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland.

Jones finished with a 12-under par score of 43, including 13 birdies, and just one stroke shy of the course record during league play. It was Jones’ third consecutive week of play and fourth through six weeks. He has averaged a score of 51.25 — 54, 57, 51 and a season-best 43. In 2021, Jones played in only three of 31 weeks of league competition from mid-March through mid-October, with a personal best score of 50.

Jones was tied for the lead at the midway point, having thrown seven birdies on the first nine holes. He pulled away on the back nine for a comfortable three-stroke win over Bill Shreve, of Cumberland, B.J. Lewis, of Eckhart, and David Warder, of Frostburg. The trio tied for second place with a 47.

Ten of the 12 players in the field threw under par on the night, but Ethan Von Hagel, of Cumberland, was the only other player under 50, finishing fifth overall with a 49.

It’s expected scores across the board could drop by at least a stroke or two starting in Week 7, set for a 5:15 p.m. tee time on April 28 at Central. That’s because all nine active baskets are being upgraded to MVP Disc Sports Black Hole Gravity baskets. These baskets are permanent, and approved by the Professional Disc Golf Association. The upgrade is funded through a 50-50 partnership between Western Maryland Disc Golf and Central Assembly of God.

League play is open to the public, and league membership is not required. For more information, visit the Western Maryland Disc Golf page on Facebook or call or text 301-697-7925.
