Mallery, Warder close behind
CUMBERLAND — Dan Beachy and Nick Russ deadlocked atop the field of 13 players during Week 7 of the Western Maryland Disc Golf singles league on Thursday at Central Assembly of God Course in Cumberland.
Beachy, of Frostburg, and Russ, of Cumberland, finished the 18 holezs with an identical, 9-under par score of 46. Because the format of the league is “tag” play, the participant that has the lowest tag number to begin the evening would earn the lowest tag in the vent of a tie. Beachy came into the match with a lower tag than Russ and walked away with the lowest tag available.

At the midway point, both Beachy and Russ found themselves in a tie for second place. Beachy and Russ were sitting at 5-under par, while Bill Shreve, of Cumberland, shot a 6-under, 21 after nine holes. After the first four holes of the back nine Beachy pulled ahead by one stroke over Russ. Russ took the stoke pack on No. 15 and the two stayed even the rest of the way.
Colby Mallery, of Mount Savage, finished in third place, two strokes behind the leaders with a 48. David Warder, of Frostburg, was one stroke behind Mallery with a 49 while Shreve finished in fifth place with a 50.
All 13 players finished within 15 strokes of each other. B.J. Lewis placed sixth with a 51, while last week’s winner Nolan Jones tied with Scott Mallery with a 52. Seth Wilson, Ethan Shreve and Brett Workman finished in a three-way tie for eighth with a 57, while Ethan Von Hagel threw a 58 and Tyler Gilks threw a 61.
This was the first league round played on the new Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) approved MVP Disc Sports Black Hole Gravity baskets. Lewis, director of Western Maryland Disc Golf, has indicated a desire to pursue PDGA-sanctioned league play at some point in the future. The basket upgrade is one requirement the group has to meet in order to do so.
