GRANTSVILLE — Greater Garrett County Youth Lacrosse announced Thursday that the league will field two Flex 6 teams for the Spring 2022 season. Registration is set to open Jan. 1, 2022.

One team will be based in Oakland and a second team based in Frostburg. The teams will consist of six players on the field and will be a fast-paced, exciting game with no intentional contact. Click here for more information on the Flex 6 style of play.

Twice-weekly practices will begin March 16. Games will be on Saturdays starting April 23. There will be four co-ed age groups, including: Under 18, Under 14, Under 10 and Under 7.

Registration is set to open on Jan. 1, 2022, and there are staggered timeframes which reflect increased registration fees. The three periods are Jan. 1 to Jan. 29, Jan. 30 to Feb. 25, and Feb. 26 to March 11. Registration fees for athletes playing in Oakland will be $20, $25, and $30, respectively, while Frostburg players will pay $25, $30 and $35. The league indicated players living within the city limits of Frostburg will receive a $5 discount if those players registered to play in Frostburg.

US Lacrosse membership is required for league players. The cost of that membership ranges between $15 and $30 depending on the player’s age, the league said in a news release.

Clinics to be held in April

After a round of clinics held this past September and October in Garrett and Allegany counties in Maryland and Mineral County in West Virginia, the league received a grant from USA Lacrosse to hold three TryLax Clinics during the Spring 2022 season.

TryLax clinics are a 90-minute, introductory lacrosse experience for kids who have never played before but are thinking they might want to play. The clinic features USA Lacrosse-designed curriculum delivered by coaches.

The grant is for 50 boys and 50 girls, and will include a ball, stick, shirt and membership to USA Lacrosse. Registration per athlete will be between $35 and $40 depending on location.

The first session will be held at Potomac State College in Keyser, W.Va., on April 2 starting at 3 p.m. A second session will be conducted at Glendening Park in Frostburg starting at 1 p.m. The date and time for the Oakland clinic has not yet been finalized.
