FLINTSTONE — Registration is now open for the inaugural 50K, 25K and relay trail races at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone. Prices go up Jan. 1.
Race day at Rocky Gap is Oct. 15, 2022, which is generally close to peak fall foliage season in Western Maryland.
The Rocky Gap 50K is set to become the second ultramarathon in Allegany County, following in the footsteps of the Fire on the Mountain 50K in Green Ridge State Forest, also in the eastern end of the county. In 2020, the Fire on the Mountain 50K, which began in 2010, added a 25K option. The Potomac Highlands Distance Club, which started the Fire on the Mountain 50K as the first ultra in Allegany County, also is responsible for the first in-county marathon (Mountain Maryland Marathon Festival in 2009 and 2010) and the first in-county trail race (Helmstetter’s Curve Distance Run, 2009).
The R0cky Gap event, staged by Virginia-based EX2 Adventures, is open to solo runners as well as relay teams of two or three runners each for both the 50K and 25K distances. EX2 Adventures is no stranger to Rocky Gap, having staged multi-sport events in eastern Allegany County since 2004. This is to be the organization’s first running-only competition at the park.
The 25K is roughly 15.5 miles, while the 50K is about 31 miles. Runners will utilize three different 5-mile loops (loops A, B and C). The 25K runners complete each loop once, while 50K runners complete each loop twice.
Relay team members will have a single race bib that will be handed off to the team’s next runner in a designated exchange area.
There is approximately 1,400 feet in elevation change in the 25K and about double that for the 50K.
