Own goal nearly sinks Cougars

Cougars rally for 2nd tie

CUMBERLAND — The Cougars rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to force a tie with the Eagles at the end of regulation Monday night in U10 Recreational indoor soccer league at the Riverside YMCA in Cumberland.

Part of the first-half deficit was self-inflicted, as a Cougars defender nudged the ball towards the far end of the net on the Cougars side of the field.

The Cougars’ offense came alive in the second half, though, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 2-1 when they scored with 12 minutes and 12 seconds left in regulation. About a minute later, the Eagles nearly went up 3-1 with some solid offensive pressure that was saved by the new Cougars goalie.

The Cougars forged a 2-2 tie with 8:12 remaining. Both teams had solid scoring opportunities in the final eight minutes but neither could convert.

With the tie, the Cougars fall to 0-4-2 on the season. They next play at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 3 against the Indians, then finish out the season against the The Pride on Jan. 7 and the Miners on Jan. 10.
