CUMBERLAND — The Cougars rallied from a 3-0 early deficit to the Bishop Walsh Spartans and worked to a 4-4 tie Monday evening in U10 Recreational indoor soccer league at the Cumberland YMCA.

It was the Cougars’ third game of the nine-game season.

Tied 3-3 after the first 20 minutes going into halftime, the Spartans took a 4-3 lead with 8:38 to play. The Cougars tied with with 4:10 to go.

The Cougars lost their first two games of the season, first to The Pride on Nov. 11 and then to the Flintstone Aggies on Nov. 18, both times by large margins. On opening night, The Pride executed all parts of the game flawlessly and it was later learned the recreational league did not have enough teams to fill the spots, so some of the competitive “premier” teams were asked to fill in. That did not bode well for the Cougars, who were on pace early to lose that game 40-0.

However, the YMCA’s official scorers are directed to stop adding points to the winning time if the margin is seven goals. The Pride barely took a shot in the second half of the opener, instead working on their passing game and kicking it to their own goalie to work the clock.

The Aggies weren’t the Pride, but the Cougars were still no match for them a week later. The Aggies won big.

After the tie — the best the Cougars have played in a season without practices — the Cougars coach seemed quite satisfied with the tie and noted the players were still learning each other’s names.

It was, by far, the best the Cougars played on offense, defense and in goal in a single game.

The Cougars play again on Dec. 6 (Fighting Irish), Dec. 13 (Team Predator) and Dec. 20 (Eagles) before a two-week break over the holidays.
