Obituary: Jesse Spencer

ROCKINGHAM, NC. — Walter Jesse Spencer, 94, of Rockingham, passed away SundayJuly 5, 2015 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. 
He was born February 25, 1921 in Hamlet, a son of the late Walter Jordan Spencer and Willie Brigman Spencer.

Jesse was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a certified public accountant and a founding partner of the accounting firm of Dixon, Hughes, and Goodman LLC.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rockingham and served in many roles with his church throughout the years.

flagJesse served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 147 in Rockingham.  He contributed his talents by serving on several local bank boards and acted as chairman of the Rockingham Urban Renewal Program.  Jesse served on the boards of Richmond Community College Foundation Inc. and the Richmond County Historical Society.  He was a member of the Rockingham Rotary Club, and supported many charitable organizations including The March of Dimes.

He was preceded in death by his son, Walter J. Spencer, Jr.; and siblings, Robert L. Spencer and Edith M. (Polly) Gibson of Laurinburg.

Jesse is survived by his wife of 64, Evelyn B. (Tot) Spencer; a son, John B. Spencer and wife, Beth, and grandsons, Jack and Bridges, all of Atlanta, Ga.;  and siblings, Mary S. Williams of Laurinburg and Lindo T. Spencer of Tarboro.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8 at First Baptist Church in Rockingham with Dr. Jim Nelson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7 at Watson – King Funeral Home in Rockingham.
