HAMLET — Two dozen members of Cub Scout troops 527, 49, 64 and 90 wrapped up the annual Richmond County Cub Scout Day Camp on Friday at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Hamlet.

They did it with a long sheet of plastic that turned into a waterslide when volunteers from the East Rockingham Fire Department opened up the tap.

The morning activity capped a week of fun that included archery, bb gun target shooting, launching rockets, lessons in fire safety from the Hamlet Fire Department, creating and flying paper and foam airplanes, a visit from birdwatcher Terry Sharpe, a visit from a local beekeeper and more. The scouts also were visited by County Ranger Matt Gordon and colleagues with the North Carolina Forest Service. They brought along their heavy construction equipment — and  helicopter — for a static display.

This year’s camp was co-directed by Nikki Keyes and Dorothy Moore. Though her son Dakota earned Eagle Scout three years ago, Moore remains Cubmaster for Troop 527 in Hamlet. Neither Moore nor Keyes volunteered, exactly, for their positions.

“We got voluntold,” Keyes said with a smile before distributing ice pops to two dozen eager young kids.
