Vernon Wayne McDonald, 69, of 368 Graham Bridge Road, Rockingham, N.C., died Sunday, May 10, 2015 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
He was born November 22, 1945 in Rockingham, son of Roy L. McDonald and Alma Greene McDonald.
Vernon was a veteran of U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam and receiving a Bronze Star and two purple hearts; a member of McDonald Baptist Church, co-owner of Hamlet Hardware, and former County Commissioner.
He was most proud of his achievements during his time being a Marine, “Hardware Man,” Farmer, father, grandfather and brother. His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by many.
He is survived by his daughter, Georgia McDonald of Rockingham; son, Vern McDonald of Raleigh; true companion, Shelia Dellinger; brothers, Duran McDonald of Charlotte, Carnie McDonald of Rockingham and Larry McDonald of Rockingham; sisters, Alleta Zerof of Hamlet, Joyce Matthews of Rockingham, Jeanette Marzen of BelAire, MD., Ann London of Charleston, S.C. and Debra Clark of Rockingham; grandchildren, Chase, Carson, Claire and McKenzie McDonald.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Harrington Funeral Home.
The Funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13 at McDonald Baptist Church with Rev. Alex Perakis officiating. Burial will follow at McDonald Baptist Church Cemetery.
