HAMLET — American Legion Post 49 Commander Joe Richardson recently presented Master Sgt. (ret.) Jimmy Brigman with a donation of $270 to purchase U.S. flags.

Brigman, through the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 59, spearheads the effort to place more than 800 flags on the grave markers of military veterans in Richmond County cemeteries.

Brigman has been placing flags on the graves of American’s military veterans for the past 26 years to honor those who have served and died for our country.

Richardson and American Legion Post 49 members hope others will reach out to Brigman to make a donation. Each flag costs about 88 cents but he aims to place 4,000 flags a year at a cost of more than $3,500.

Brigman is no stranger to military service or the sacrifices that come with it. He spent 23 years, eight months and 14 days in the Army and is credit with 486 jumps while with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Should anyone be interested in donating, Brigman can be reached at 910-582-4021 or reaching him by mail at Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 608, Hamlet NC 28345.
