HOFFMAN — Runners from Fayetteville and Raleigh took the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, earlier today at the May Madness 50K
Tomasz Kochanowicz led wire-to-wire in the 5K loop — navigated 10 times, at the top of each hour from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. — to finish in 3 hours, 38 minutes and 58 seconds. His fastest 5K loop surrounding the J. Robert Gordon Field Trial Area was his second, 19:24.8, while his slowest was lap seven in 23:03.3.
Will Pearson was second overall in 4:07:12.1, 28 minutes and 14.1 seconds behind Kochanowicz. Pearson was seventh after the first 5K but closed the gap on laps two through six, with a fast 5K of 19:27.5 on the second lap and slowest on lap eight (28:33.8).
Genno Cline posted the fastest cumulative 50K time by a female in 5:12:54.2. She had a fast lap of 26:51 on the second lap and a May Madness slow of 40:13.1 but, like Kochanowicz, she never lost since the start of the first 5K.
The facility is situated along Ledbetter Road, located between Millstone and Derby roads. It is situated on the Sandhills Game Land area, one of the most extensive and accessible longleaf pine habitats in the state. All 63,000 acres are cared for by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
The course, which includes sand, dirt, leaves and pine straw, is a single counterclockwise loop — times 10 — takes the path behind the field trials barn towards Ellerbe Tower Road. Going through a wooded area, runner will take the fire line over to Range Road. Runners then will head west and back to the starting area.

Genno Cline, of Raleigh, won the women’s title on Saturday at the May Madness 50K near Hoffman.
Beginning at 7 a.m. and then again at the top of each hour for the next nine hours, runners set off to complete each 5K loop as quickly as they could — right through the heat that North Carolina offers in May.
Twenty runners completed all 10 3.1-mile loops. Four others completed at least five loops.
