HAMLET — Sharon Johnson, director of Career and Technical Education in Richmond County Schools, was presented on Tuesday night the 2015 CTE Administrator of the Year Award in North Carolina’s Southwest Region.

Ann Calcuitt, Southwest Region NC CTE coordinator, presented the award and topped off the congratulations with a plant from the district’s horticulture program.

“This is a surprise, y’all,” Johnson said. “A big surprise.”

The announcement was celebrated by Johnson’s mother, brother, sister, and other family members.

Kenan Fellow

Felix Nagy-Lup, a math teacher at the Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy, was recognized on Tuesday as a Kenan Fellow.

Kelly DeLong, director of K-12 Math and Science for Richmond County Schools, said Nagy-Lup and 39 other teachers across North Carolina will spend five weeks this summer in a STEM-centric environment that focuses on career exploration.

The year-long fellowship will culminate in the fellows’ design, development and implementation “of a cutting-edge program” into the local school system.

Nagy-Lup will work with Amy Hamilton Forrester, of FirstHealth of the Carolinas, for a “Patients in the Classroom” program.
