Free seminar to go beyond ‘shoebox accounting’

HAMLET —Recordkeeping is a task entrepreneurs most often take for granted, according to accounting consultant Semone Brisson.

“Bookkeeping ranks last on the to-do list for most entrepreneurs until April 15 looms near,” says Brisson, “That’s when unprepared business owner’s start to panic.”

Brisson hopes to help entrepreneurs avoid the stress of shoebox accounting in her seminar, “Bookkeeping Made Easy,” which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Cole Auditorium on the main campus of Richmond Community College in Hamlet.

SBC-Logo“I share a simple system that anyone can learn and easily implement using pencil and paper or an electronic spreadsheet like Excel,” said Brisson. “The only cost is a small investment of your time. You don’t need an expensive computer, software, or a huge learning curve to take care of the basics and stay out of trouble.”

Each year at tax time, entrepreneurs make a New Year’s resolution to get rid of the shoebox and the tremendous stress from not being organized. But most put it off.

“In this seminar, I compare bookkeeping to plumbing — if you don’t take care of your plumbing system, you’ll have a mess on your hands. That can happen with your books, too,” said Brisson

An accountant and consultant based in Salisbury, Brisson shares her passion for financial literacy for entrepreneurs by teaching in Small Business Centers throughout the N.C. Community College System.

Pre-registration for Thursday’s seminar may be completed online at tiny.cc/sbcseminars; or via email or phone by contacting Small Business Center Director Deborah Hardison at ddhardisond@richmondcc.edu or (910) 410.1687. Pre-registration is preferred but walk-ins are welcome.
