ROCKINGHAM — Three people appeared to avoid injury late Tuesday night at arguably one of the most dangerous intersections within the city limits of Rockingham.

First-responders were deployed at approximately 11:27 p.m. for a possible head-on collision on Broad Avenue at Long Drive in between Burking King, Sonic and Arby’s.

Upon arrival, personnel with the Rockingham Police Department, Rockingham Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS and volunteers with Richmond County Rescue Squad saw the right front section of a white Dodge Caravan had collided with the front of a Honda sedan.

The driver of the van, a medical supply specialist from Winston-Salem who delivers medicine to regional pharmacies, said he was traveling east on Highway 74 Business and preparing to turn left onto Long Drive — following the directions of his GPS unit on his cellphone.

The next thing he knew was his commercial van had come into contact with the sedan. The van’s driver, and an adult male and female from the Honda, all remained with their vehicles as police officers evaluated the scene.

In a March presentation to the Rockingham City Council, Police Chief Billy Kelly submitted a report showing that Broad Avenue, or Highway Business 74, was the most likely place a traffic accident resulting in property damage or personal injury would occur in 2014 — 109 property damage (16.1 percent) and 45 personal injury (34.8 percent).

Long Drive, with 18 and five reports each, respectively, was the second most dangerous place to be a motorist or passenger last year and Rockingham Road (24 and 10) was third.
