Mount Carmel Road bridge to be replaced

RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Transportation will begin road closures and construction on Monday, April 20, to replace the bridge over Suck Creek on Mount Carmel Road, south of Robbins in Moore County.

The bridge, built in 1951, is considered functionally obsolete, which means it was built to design standards no longer in use, such as narrow lanes, inadequate under-clearances and insufficient load-carrying capacity. This project will replace the timber structure with a new, concrete one. It needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands to make the route safer and more effective for drivers.

dotThe new bridge should be open by Aug. 17.

The road around the bridge will be closed until completion of the project. There will be a signed detour using Mount Carmel Road, Old Carthage Road, N.C. 705 and Fire Tower Road. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

This project is part of the department’s statewide bridge program to improve the condition of the state’s bridges.

NCDOT awarded the contract for the project to TCB Builders of Lexington for $568,737. The contract was awarded to the lowest bidder as required by state law.
