Justus Ellerbe leaps into the air for a score, helping JustDisc League climb back into the match against Meese Amigos.
The Rockingham-based JustDisc League — comprised of Ellerbe, Ryan Humphrey, Stormy Flinchum, Wells Griffin, Trey Knotts and John Pittman — finished atop the eight-team tournament with a 10-8 victory over the brown T-shirt-clad Meese Amigos, of Fayetteville. The Amigos were up 8-7 but JustDISC League scored the match’s final three points to seal the tournament win.
Each of the eight teams paid a $140 entry fee. Tournament T-shirts were sold, too, and all proceeds will be donated to the Place of Grace Rescue Mission in East Rockingham.
Pastor Gary Richardson opened the tournament with a prayer, and afterwards more than 55 players used the next five and one-half hours to determine the best team. Event coordinator C.J. Smith, youth pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church and a member of the Place of Grace board of directors, said things seemed to go smoothly with the first-year event. He expressed appreciation for the cooperation from officials at Hamlet Middle School for use of the fields and bathrooms.
