J. Dowdy Road bridge to be replaced

RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Transportation will begin road closures and construction on Monday, April 27, to replace the bridge over Richland Creek on J. Dowdy Road, south of Robbins in Moore County.

The bridge, built in 1964, is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means it was built to design standards no longer in use, such as narrow lanes, inadequate under-clearances and insufficient load-carrying capacity. A functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge is like an old house. It was constructed years ago and built based on all of the particular standards of the time. Now, it needs updating. This doesn’t mean it’s unsafe; it means work needs to be done to bring it up to modern standards.

dotThis project will replace the timber structure with a concrete one. It needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands to make the route safer and more effective for drivers. The new bridge should be open by August 24.

The road around the bridge will be closed until completion of the project. There will be a signed detour using N.C. 24/27 East, Bethlehem Church Road and J. Dowdy Road. Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

This project is part of the department’s statewide bridge program to improve the condition of the state’s bridges.

NCDOT awarded the contract for the project to TCB Builders of Lexington for $588,807. The contract was awarded to the lowest bidder as required by state law.
