HAMLET — Richmond County Ranger Matt Gordon had his camera handy to snap a photo of a hawk standing guard atop his North Carolina Forest Service work truck.

Gordon took the photo on Saturday outside the Hamlet Fire Department, where he’d stopped after finishing up work with an outdoor fire off of Perry Williams Road. He’d stopped by the Hamlet Fire Department to refill his rig with water.

Gordon said he’s learned to keep his camera handy for unexpected situations, though it’s the first time something like this has happened.

There are five known types of hawks in North Carolina. It’s believed this is likely a red-tailed hawk, though that’s not a certainty.
