The two met at a vacant home in the 600 block of Rockingham Road. Neighbors knew the home to be vacant for quite some time and called 911 when they saw smoke coming from the chimney. The concern was the house was on fire.

Personnel from the Rockingham Fire and Rockingham Police departments responded to find the two rather surprised at the invasion of their perceived privacy. The man should have been elsewhere, while the girl “should have been in school,” said Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly.

Kelly suggested it’s a good time to “caution parents to be mindful” of their children’s online activity “and set filters on the Internet, and check behind their children.”

The girl’s mother, escorted to the scene by local police officers, said she thought her daughter was in school.

The Pee Dee Post‘s original report indicated the man was 18, but the age-related issues began before then. The two initially told authorities the man was 17 and the girl 16.
