Windy Hill to welcome up to 1,000 riders

Weekend event kicks off with Friday practice

ELLERBE — Windy Hill Sports, in conjunction with Victory Sports, is set to host the opener of the Ultra Series, sponsored by FMF, South of the Border, and Parts Unlimited. Up to 1,000 riders are expected to descend this weekend upon the Ellerbe facility to showcase their skills in the Southeast Area Qualifier.

The event is the first step in qualifying for a position in the Loretta Lynn National event in August in Tennessee.

Gates open at 4 p.m. Thursday. Practice runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, with practice registration opening at 8 a.m. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Kelli Ussery said traffic leading to the entrance of Windy Hill Sports on U.S. Route 220 Business featured motorhomes “backed two miles down 220 … bumper to bumper to bumper, just to get in the gates.”

Depending on the weather, motorists could experience similar delays this weekend.

Entry fees for spectators:

* Arriving Saturday: $25 adult, $10 per child (includes Sunday entrances)
* Arriving Sunday: $15 adult, $5 per child
