ELLERBE — The flags were flying high in a steady breeze above the Windy Hill Sports motocross race track on Sunday.
Winy Hill teamed up with Victory Sports to host the opener of the Ultra Series, sponsored by FMF, South of the Border, and Parts Unlimited. Up to 1,000 riders were expected to descend this weekend to showcase their skills in the Southeast Area Qualifier.
After Saturday’s downpour — in which racing continued — there was nothing better than putting in some fast laps under a late winter sun. Riders and their loved ones lined up along U.S. Route 220 Alternate north of Ellerbe early Sunday morning to gain entrance to the sprawling private facility owned by Peggy and Joe Ussery.
More than 300 riders competed on Saturday through steady and sometimes pouring rain. The sun appeared generously from dawn on Sunday but the mud didn’t go away — which made racing conditions just about perfect.
