Church Basketball League is serious fun

HAMLET — There’s little risk to the crowd inside the gymnasium at Second Day Baptist Church reaching the allowable maximum legal capacity of 533 people.
But for those who were there on Monday, the first full night of postseason play in the Richmond County Church Basketball League, there was some serious fun. There were no bracket-busters — top-seeded Second Day Baptist “B” overwhelmed No. 8 Crestview Baptist Church 65-43, No. 4 Freedom Baptist Church handled No. 5 Southside Baptist Church, No. 3 Second Day Baptist Church “A” managed to get past No. 6 Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 53-33, and No. 2 Cartledge Creek Baptist Church took out No. 7 Roberdel Baptist Church, 53-45.
No. 1 SBC “B” 65, No. 8 Crestview 43
J.J. Ingram scored 13 points to lead the top-seeded SBC “B” past Crestview, 65-43.
Zykie Lockhart added 11 points in the win. Patrick Chappell and Sam Crouch scored 11 points each for Crestview in the loss. Jack VunCannon added eight points.
No. 4 Freedom 60, No. 5 Southside 36
Freedom Baptist jumped out to first-half leads of 9-1 and 22-8 en route to a 24-point win over Southside.
Danny Bailey and Justin Jackson scored 14 points each and Travon Davenport tacked on another 10 points to lead Freedom. Josh Williams led Southside with 10 points and Anthony Hailey chipped in with 9 points in the loss.
No. 3 SBC “A” 53, Mt. Olive 33
Jaylen Terry scored 14 points to lad SBC’s “A” team to a 20-point win over Mt. Olive. Chris Hinson added 8 points in the win.
Nic Liles led Mt. Olive with 11 points.
No. 2 Cartledge Creek 53, No. 7 Roberdel 45
In the March 19 play-in game, Crestview toppled Faith Baptist, 60-52.
The championship game is set for Monday, March 30. The nine-team league began play on Feb. 16. Each team played the other eight once each. Games are played with 20-minute halves with a running clock except for the final two minutes in each half. Teams get a five-minute halftime break.
