EAST ROCKINGHAM — The Carolina Havoc nipped the Richmond County Speed 12-6 in overtime in both teams’ East Coast Football Association season opener Saturday afternoon at East Rockingham Park.
It was a defensive battle from the start, as both offenses struggled to get going. Speed defenders Daily Whiten and Jordan Trapp each recorded an interception while Bama Bonds and Brandon Breedon tied for a game-high five tackles each. Darryl Coleman and Michael Pitts each registered a sack in the loss.
Daunte McLaughlin led the home team’s ground game with 54 yards rushing, including a 12-yard touchdown run. Ross Tillman hauled in 77 yards through the air.
“We just gotta communicate better as a unit and better things will happen for us,” said Speed coach Dedrick Petty. “The Havoc played lights out and made big plays at the right time.”
Both teams play in the Southern Conference. The Havoc are from Lillington. The Speed are back in action on March 14 at East Rockingham Park against the Capital City Cowboys. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
