ROCKINGHAM — A student at Richmond Senior High School was recognized for her essay about America’s constitutional checks and balances and earned a $250 college scholarship for the effort.

McKenzie Grimes followed the guidelines in her essay for the Florence Kidder Memorial Scholarship on the following topic: “Our Country’s founders created three separate branches of government and constitutional checks and balances in order to distribute power and prevent its accumulation. Are these separations of power within our federal government more difficult to maintain today than in the past?”

The scholarship was awarded on the basis of merit of the individual applicant’s essay (35 percent), character (25 percent), grades and scholarship record (35 percent) and need (5 percent).
